Several years ago I had the privilege of having a sweet little lady about 90 years old.

She was young in spirit though. And what a ”lifes daily inspiration” she was from the first day I met her.

We will call her Louise, I still think of her as the butterfly lady. And almost everytime I see a butterfly she comes to mind.

We meet so many people in our lifetime and some just naturally leave footprints on your heart. And this lady did just that.

The first day I met her she gave me a butterfly pin. She said she gave them to all who entered her door.

She told me this quote that first day and many more times after.

”The butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough”. ~Rabindranath Tagore

She said, by way of illustration she wasn’t counting months but living in the moment. And she would have time enough.

What a ”life’s daily inspiration” we could all learn from.

She had figured out a way to stay busy while being bed bound.

Being clever she called her pastor and said, she would love to send get well cards to all the shut-ins.

He thought this was a great idea so set up to supply her with the church’s cards and envelopes, and postage necessary.spenye

She would write those cards every week and on the outside place a beautiful butterfly.

Maybe it doesn’t sound like much but to those shuts it meant someone cared enough to take time to not only send them a card but to place that butterfly on the envelope as well.

Reminds me of the saying ”Little is much when God is in it.”

Ms. Louise continued sending out the cards weekly. And I think she received as many as she sent out.

And then one morning she said, What do you think about me asking for birthday cards for our young people. My immediate response,do you have any idea how many there are at your church?

And without batting an eye or missing a beat she replied yes I called to ask last night. There are nearly a hundred from cradle roll to young adult.

So I said, that would only be a few more a month then. Ms. Louise answered yeah I know not nearly enough huh? While I was thinking well spread out that shouldn’t be too much for this dear little butterfly lady and if it was I’d help her.

So she lay there thinking then she said, If we add all the seniors class and also ask to do the ”we missed you at church cards” (I didn’t know there was a card for that.) Listen and learn as they say.

Her little pastor came later that day. Just FYI he was an awesome guy. A short little fella in statue and balled as a cucumber. With big wire-rim glasses and a huge smile from ear to ear. After listening to Ms. Louise’s request he said, only if you agree to let the church make all your cards and provide you the postage. And only if you feel like it there’s no pressure to get it all done.  Agreed Ms. Louise?

Agreed she said. So the next week she started her new ministry the church secretary set her up with everything her pastor had promised.

Also a list of birthdays that month, and the ”sorry we missed your list”.

A few weeks or so later I went to the mailbox to get her mail and there was maybe 15 cards in it. She was so encouraged. They were unexpected and served to encourage and inspire her.

Every week that passed there were a few more than the last.

Her pastor had shared that he had announced about Ms. Loiuse’s mail ministry. And her church family was responding to her love and devotion.

Two weeks before Ms. Louise went home to be with the Lord she sent out 45 cards. I know because I stamped them for her. Those butterflies were really flying.

But, the best part she received over 70 cards that week some from people she didn’t even know

So the next time you catch yourself thinking what can I do? I’m sick and can’t do anything. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Just look for it.

Elaine and I being in Hospice for over 70 years combined.

We’ve seen first-hand patients who have been helped by different medicines. Some conventional some not. We are advocates of
Medical Marijuana because it does work. And for CBD oil which is readily available and legal for everyone. If you are interested in checking it out.

  1. What a very inspiring story!
I love butterflies and I would have loved to have received one of her cards. It is just so wonderful when others give so freely of themselves even though it might not ‘seem’ like much. It is even more amazing when you see the ‘butterfly effect’ that one small action can do.
Thanks so much for sharing and I will indeed consider a butterfly whenever I see the need to inspire or help someone.

  2. What an inspiring story and thank you for sharing it.
I had never heard about the butterfly that way, but I love it and it’s meaning. I love butterflies and often have one that lands on me.
Not sure if it means anything or not, but when it happens I feel a sense of peace and happiness.
The story about Louise brought tears to my eyes. It is so nice to hear when others have that much love in their heart and how they share it with others.
To know that she thought about others while being bed bound, is just like you said. Where there is a will there’s a way. Louise showed the desire to help others in her own special way.
This can definitely teach us all that even a simple little gesture can reach many and and spread love and happiness.

  3. What a beautiful story! “The butterfly lady” sounds like a very special woman. It seems so fitting that she would have a love for the butterfly. Anytime a butterfly is around, you just can’t help but stop and admire the beauty of it. I bet this wonderful woman was a lot like that. Bringing joy everywhere she went. The world could sure use more people like her.

    1. Thank Dan for your awesome comment and yes, she was certainly that type. Just like the butterfly she attracted people from her hospital bed by her card sharing ministry.
