When I was younger I loved woodworking still do. But, my arthritis has put a stop to a lot of things I use to make. Today I am sharing one of the things I made 19 years ago. You say how do you remember that so well. That’s easy I built a 4 ft high 3 ft wide dollhouse for a set of triplets. They are now in there first year of college. Whew, I am getting old.

Everywhere I go and look there’s another “ Life’s Daily Inspiration” one of the sweet benefits of getting more mature. Not older just better. ( like a fine old antique) or a (great vintage wine.) Just better with a little age.

But, back to that dollhouse, it’s memorable because of those adorable triplets. I made my own pattern and decided to make it.

I decided to make three floors. Get it triplets! Lol Ok enough with the jokes for now.

I had to stop and figure out how big does it need to be for three little girls to share. I decided on 4 feet wide. 12 inches deep. And 4 1/2 feet tall. With. Gabled ceiling. The upstairs was a bedroom. With three beds. Kind of like the house of the 3 bears.  Dressers skateboards, carpet, curtains.

All the usual kid’s bedroom stuff.

Some people like to go running, others go shopping, and still, others watch football, soccer, basketball, baseball all of these can be a hobby.

I am one of the people who love to learn new things, I have many hobbies. I sometimes think mine and Elaine occupation with Hospice results in my innate curiosity. But then I remember my dad telling you can do whatever you set your mind to. Anything is learnable.

And if you look back through our articles you will know that I have several hobbies.

Woodworking is one of my very first endeavors though.

And the triplets dollhouse was a work in progress for about 2 months. While trying to work 60 and 70 hours a week. For those who don’t know Hospice caregiving isn’t a 9 to 5 job.

So moved this project to the back part of my bedroom. And brought all my miniature tools inside. And since I am a horrible sleeper. I’m sure because I’m working all night 3 or 4 nights then switch to afternoons, and back to all days. Yeah, it messes with you body’s internal clock.

So here in lies the reason I was able to work in my room. When I couldn’t sleep I’d get up and work on this doll house.

I made the fireplace out of pebbles and silicone.  I placed each shingle on the roof one at a time.

And built the jacuzzi from a round shaped bowel. And then tiled the floors and around the jacuzzi. And put the pebbles around the edge.

I had so much fun making the kitchen cabinets. Sink, stove and bought the refrigerator. You can buy faucets, kitchen cabinets handles all from the hobby shop. Or from Amazon online.

I cut and made all wood trim after papering the walls.

And carpeting the rooms I wanted to be carpeted.

I then bought some of the furnishings throughout the house.

I choose to make my own curtains and kitchen valances.

They were even back expensive. I used regular carpet and small house tiles to save money.

Oh, it was so much fun shopping for all the accessories I don’t think to this day I have a favorite room. But, I can tell you each room let me know you can do anything on a budget if you try.

I would shop each room one at a time. I still love the little copper molds on the wall. I have some still hanging on my wall in my kitchen.

Those kids were made to take care of the dollhouse and when the girls outgrew it. Their dad had a piece of plexiglass cut to fit the back. And seal the back so it looks just like these photo’s now 19 years later.

My photos aren’t the best but, please remember their almost 20 years old and have faded some.

You looking back I had no idea what would become of this dollhouse. These three girls used the little two inch dolls.

To play with it. And now it will be passed to their children.

Not a bad way to be remembered as someone who is a memory maker. And the best part I get to share in all those memories.

  3. How in the world were you able to build that doll house? It looks so perfect and inviting…alright can I move in? (hehehe)…

I’ve always admired people that can build things with their hands, the Lord himself was a master carpenter! Did you take a carpentry class in high school?

Your article reminds me of the time when I was in the first grade (a very long, long, long, long time ago), my classmate got a doll house delivered to her at school by her dad, it was her birthday…and all of us kids were like WOW!!!! (And he brought cupcakes for her too!) The doll house frankly was almost as tall as her…while she was thrilled about her birthday present, she was very emotional she didn’t get to see her dad; her parents were in the middle of a divorce and the mom didn’t want her to see the children. It’s funny how vividly I remember this incident.

    1. No, no classes just self taught.I was always raised I could learn to do anything if I tried. And I so appreciate your wonderful comments. I think my inner child came out in the making of this dollhouse.
Thanks for sharing your memory for your childhood.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comments on the dollhouse I built nearly twenty years ago.I often wished I knew then what I know now. I think I could do so much better. Now that I’ve retired perhaps I’ll try again. Hope you find your girls that perfect dollhouse.
      Blessings,
      Scarlett

  5. Wow,

That doll house was incredible. Wishing you the best of luck with your college bound triplets. I don’t know how you did it. Being a father of three with one set of twins, I cannot imagine how you found the time to build that doll house. You should not have had an issue with sleeping. Anyway, the work on the interior of the doll house is very unique and intricate, and looks possibly more time consuming than the external frame. Your Father was very wise instilling you with the mantra that you can teach yourself to do anything.

    1. Thank you Jim, for awesome comments. I have always been a terrible sleeper and still am. Unfortunately I hear everything day or night. So what’s a girl to do! Build a dollhouse. And many other things to come along with our Hospice stories. Maybe you can teach your own kids they can learn to do whatever they set there minds to.
      Blessings,
      Scarlett

  6. That seriously had to take skill to be able to create something as incredible as that. But that’s just a testament to how strong willed you are and how willing you are to see a goal through. That’s awesome honestly. I have no doubt that your triplets will be successful, especially since they have you in their life.

    1. Thank you so much for kind words. I think all of us are tougher than we know we just need to challenge ourselves an reach in to achieve our goals. I love learning all kinds of things. And continue to try out many new challenges in life and hope I always will.
      Many Blessings,
      Scarlett

    1. Thank you Jenny this was a work of Love in progress. Everything added was an expression of that love. And now it will be passed down to there kids. It will be interesting to see if it survives another 19 years Lol.

  8. I read the article about your little mischievous bird, Sweetpea. It reminds me of my dog in a way since he gets me with that cute face of forgiveness with intentions to manipulate me. What great life inspirations you have to keep you going. I absolutely love your site’s concept.

    Have a great day!
