Angie- The inspiring stranger
Did you ever meet a total stranger, and know ,that you know ,that this individual is someone unique, authentic, organic, a rare breed?
A force to be reckoned with and leaving you wanting to know more about this total stranger ?
How can one be inspired in a happenstance meeting ?
Was it the words she voiced, or the way she delivered her words, the careful words that she choose?
Or the importance of the volume / tone or how she was deliberate and intentional with her hesitation ?
As well as, how she did fire off words with passion and straight from the hip with out any hint of a filter all rolled up into one?
Or what she did not say
I knew I would see her again because of our now professional ties, I just didn’t know when.
One day while I was at my hospice patients house
A lady , complete stranger, came up to me and said hello, my sister just passed away last month and we had the most amazing woman, God fearing, kind, compassionate, and yes she did shoot from the hip.
But it was not just the care she gave my sister and I, it was the directness, the education, the time she took to prepare us, yes she, I guess spoon feed us, and met us where we were to a point .
Her directness was actually a gift!
It was what we needed to hear, not what we wanted but the conversation had to happen! No easy task i am sure .
Shoot from the hip has a new meaning to me ”much appreciated.
This grieving sister Shelia , this new stranger had become a new inspiration for me.
The sister said ” would you happen to know Angie? Yes , it was the same Angie
Sheila continued speaking with her experience with Angie . She tearfully and painfully described how her sister had a rough life , lot of regrets and remorse .
The sister nor patient had shared any of this with Angie , it had really become a “ family secret “
However , Angie being Angie , pulled the sister aside one day and said “ I really think Pam is experiencing what we call terminal restlessness, it appears she may have unresolved issues “
Oh my gosh !Oh my gosh ! How did you know ? You see………
Pam also knew a stranger
When she was only 16 years old she became pregnant and had no choice but to give her son Blake up for adoption.
She was not allowed to have a picture or anything personal related to Blake nor was anyone in this family allowed to speak of Blake .
Pam went on to marry multiple times and unable to have children and / or had a hard time letting people in. Decades of carrying an open wound .
Angie gave Pam the morphine for pain per doctors order but she knew thru years of experience that morphine does not help what she calls soul pain .
Angie thought about Pam and tried to envision how Pam’s young life’s choices had effected her every day life .
And now at 88 years old and on her death bed it remains with her .
Angie called Shelia and asked her to come over as soon as she could , that she had a gift for Pam , Shelia and yes Blake .
When Shelia arrived she handed a soft blue baby blanket and asked Shelia to give it to Pam .
With shaken hands and tears falling she placed the blanket on Pam’s chest and said I love you , and Blake.
Pam opened her eyes, tears rolling gently down her face, she held and patted the little blue blanket , her furrowed brow became no more , her pain was disappearing.
She held her blanket to her cheek and in a faint voice said “I have always loved you Blake “
Pam passed away at 237 am exactly 35 min after uttering those words “ I have always loved you Blake “
Everyone has been hurt , Everyone has a story .
